US closes mostly lower after labor market data

Major stocks on Wall Street ended the trading session on Thursday mostly lower as investors digested the latest statistics on the labor market and trade deficit ahead of the report on the country's unemployment rate set for release on Friday.

The Federal Reserve reiterated that the nation is not experiencing a recession despite the concerns about the economic slowdown. Oil prices dropped to their lowest levels since the beginning of the Ukrainian conflict, while gasoline costs fell at the fastest rate in a decade. After the closing bell, Amgen, Beyond Meat, Dropbox, DoorDash, and Lyft will present their most recent quarterly results.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted by 0.26% at the close, as Walmart Inc. sank 3.78%. The Nasdaq 100 increased by 0.44%, with MercadoLibre Inc. skyrocketing 16.16%. The S&P 500 fell by 0.08%, as Ball Corporation plunged by 18.58%.

The euro gained 0.81% against the dollar, going to 1.02472 at 3:56 pm ET.
