US won't give swift reply to START inspection pull-out - Russia

Russian Foreign Ministry's Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Department Deputy Director Igor Vishnevetsky told reporters on Tuesday that Moscow does not expect Washington to give a swift response to the former's decision to withdraw its facilities from inspections under the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START).

Vishnevetsky underlined that as this mechanism has never been used before, the US will need time to "study everything thoroughly and understand what they want to do next. They will need to rework and comprehend everything," while consulting with their legal experts.

The diplomat noted that an "unequal situation" has arisen when it comes to the implementation of the START, as Russian inspectors are having a hard time traveling due to sanctions the country has been put under, which, according to him, has given Washington the upper hand in inspection activities.
