Arctic warms four times faster than rest of world

The Arctic has warmed nearly four times faster than the rest of the world since 1979 in what is marked as an "extremely unlikely event," according to the latest study published in the science journal Nature on Thursday.

"We present evidence that during 1979-2021 the Arctic has been warming nearly four times as fast as the entire globe. Thus, we caution that referring to Arctic warming as being twice as fast as global warming, as frequently stated in the literature, is a clear underestimation of the situation," the researchers noted commenting on the phenomenon known as Arctic amplification.

The World Health Organization marked climate change as the greatest threat to global health in the 21st century. Responding to the ongoing climate crisis, most western countries pledged to completely cut the emission of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide and methane, by the middle of the century.
