Schroeder sues Bundestag over closing office

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder sued the Bundestag in an effort to regain privileges that were taken away from him over his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, DPA reported on Friday citing a court filing and Schroeder's lawyer.

In May, the Bundestag took away Schroeder's right to a publicly funded office and reallocated his staff, in decisions which the lawsuit described as "rather reminiscent of an absolutist princely state in terms of the way they were made." The former chancellor asserted that such moves should not be allowed to stand in a democratic country.

Following a visit to Moscow in July, Schroeder stated that Russia wants a negotiated solution to the Ukrainian war and called for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to be launched in order to help Europe with its energy crisis. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky branded Schroeder's behavior amid the war in his country as "disgusting."
