UK considers support for energy-intensive industries

The United Kingdom is considering further relief for energy-intensive industries, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy stated on Friday. The measure under examination is an increase in the level of exemption for certain environmental and policy costs from 85% of costs up to 100%.

The government said the potential move "reflects higher UK industrial electricity prices than those of other countries including in Europe, which could hamper investment, competition and commercial viability" of domestic companies. The measure would impact around 300 businesses in the steel, paper, glass, ceramics, and cement industries.
