Johnson 'appalled' by stabbing attack on author Rushdie

United Kingdom outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday that the stabbing attack on Indian-born author Salman Rushdie has left him "appalled." The best-selling author had been assaulted earlier today at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York, where he was prepared to deliver a lecture.

"Appalled that Sir Salman Rushdie has been stabbed while exercising a right we should never cease to defend. Right now my thoughts are with his loved ones. We are all hoping he is okay," Johnson wrote on his Twitter account. According to Rushdie's spokesperson Andrew Wylie, the author underwent surgery as a result of the incident, as reported by the New York Times.

Governor of New York Kathy Hochul said Rushdie had been taken to the hospital "getting the care he needs," but withheld any other information regarding his post-attack health. "He [Salman Rushdie] is an individual who has spent decades speaking truth to power," the governor said. Rushdie's contentious writings drove him into hiding for nine years after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini demanded his execution for publishing the book "The Satanic Verses" due to its content.
