EU leaders condemn attack on Rushdie

European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell condemned on Saturday the attack on influential Iranian-born author Salman Rushdie. "International rejection of such criminal actions, which violate fundamental rights and freedoms, is the only path towards a better and more peaceful world," he stated.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the attack a "despicable act," addressing Rushdie and saying that "the world needs people like you who are not intimidated by hatred and fearlessly stand up for freedom of expression."

Neither leader mentioned the Iranian government nor the country's religious leader Ali Khamenei, who has called for Rushdie's assassination for decades. The EU is currently in the final stages of lengthy and difficult negotiations on the Iran nuclear deal.
