Biden 'shocked and saddened' about Rushdie attack

United States President Joe Biden stated he is "shocked and saddened" to hear about the attack on Salman Rushdie, which occurred in Chautauqua, New York on August 12, and extended his wishes for the writer's quick recovery.

"Salman Rushdie—with his insight into humanity, with his unmatched sense for story, with his refusal to be intimidated or silenced—stands for essential, universal ideals. [...] And today, we reaffirm our commitment to those deeply American values in solidarity with Rushdie and all those who stand for freedom of expression," he said in a written statement.

Rushdie was stabbed when he was about to start a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution. His attacker has since been charged with attempted murder. The author of the famous Midnight's Children and The Satanic Verses was issued a fatwa by Iran's Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989 due to his alleged criticism of Islam. The calls for his assassination have since been repeated by Khomeini's successors.
