US congressional delegation in Taiwan for two-day visit

A delegation of US lawmakers arrived in Taiwan for a two-day visit, only 12 days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit, the de facto US embassy in Taiwan said in a statement Sunday.

Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), Representative John Garamendi (D-CA), Representative Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), Representative Don Beyer (D-VA), and Representative Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen (R-AS) will be in Taiwan on August 14-15, "as part of a larger visit to the Indo-Pacific region," reads the statement. The group will meet with senior Taiwanese officials to discuss US-Taiwan relations, regional security, commerce, global supply chains, and other important issues of common interest.

The visit comes as relations between China and Taiwan are strained, as Beijing is sending fighter jets and fighter-bombers to Thailand ahead of joint military exercises, and the White House announced earlier that its military will conduct new air and maritime transits in the Taiwan Strait in the coming weeks.
