West 'not concerned' about nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine

Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the International Organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov (pictured), told RIA Novosti on Tuesday that the position the West is taking on the situation at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is very concerning as the countries are focusing only on how to make Russian forces leave the area and not on a possible nuclear catastrophe and its prevention.

''In the context of the situation at the Zaporizhzhia station, they have another priority task - to put pressure on the Russian Federation,'' Ulyanov explained, adding that the Western countries' joint statement made on August 12 did not even mention the fact the nuclear plant is being shelled.

Previously, Russian Deputy Chair of the Security Council and former President Dmitry Medvedev warned on Telegram that accidents may also happen at the nuclear plants in Europe as the West seems ready to arrange a new tragedy, similar to the Chernobyl disaster.
