US, Taiwan start trade negotiations, meetings set for fall

The United States and Taiwan officially started bilateral trade negotiations under the mandate agreement reached in June, with the first meetings expected to take place this fall, the Trade Representative Office (USTR) announced.

"Today, we begin negotiations with Taiwan under the auspices of AIT and TECRO that will deepen our trade and investment relationship, advance mutual trade priorities based on shared values, and promote innovation and inclusive economic growth for our workers and businesses," Deputy Trade Representative Sarah Bianchi noted in a statement released late on Wednesday.

The news comes in the wake of increased tensions with China, which repeatedly marked Taiwan as part of its territory. The latest tensions broke earlier this month due to an official visit to Taipei by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
