Plant radioactive material would cover Scandinavia, Baltic if damaged

Radioactive material would enter the zone of Scandinavia and Baltic states in case at least 25% of substances contained in one of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant's reactors is released, the Russian Defense Ministry warned on Thursday.

The assessment of the situation was made today based on the current ministry's information on the Ukrainian army's shelling of the plant. The ministry went on to say that Kiev's primary goal is to create ''an exclusion zone of up to 30 kilometers,'' introduce international forces and, in the end, accuse Moscow of nuclear terrorism.

The comment comes not long after Russia's previous announcement made earlier in the day, according to which Kiev is to shell the plant during the United Nations visit to Ukraine on August 19.
