Demilitarization of Zaporizhzhia unacceptable - Moscow

Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Ivan Nechaev, stated Thursday that the demilitarization of the surroundings of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant is unacceptable.

"Proposals for a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant are unacceptable. Their implementation will make the station even more vulnerable," Nechaev said at a briefing.

Yesterday, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the plant. However, earlier in the morning, the Russian Defense Ministry lashed out at Kiev over shelling Zaporizhzhia while stressing that, in the event of any incident, the radioactive material could affect the Scandinavian and Baltic areas.
