Kiev says Ukraine's grain exports down 54.5% so far

Ukraine's Agriculture Ministry said on Friday that the country's grain exports plunged by 54.5% to 4.16 million tonnes at the start of the 2022/23 season compared to the same period a year ago.

The decline was mostly caused by Russia blocking ports in the Black Sea following its attack on Ukraine, which has prompted concerns of possible food shortages in the Middle East and Africa. However, Moscow and Kiev reached a deal mediated by Turkey in end-July under which three Black Sea ports were unblocked.

The Ukrainian government asserted it could harvest about 50 million tonnes of grain in 2022, significantly lower than last year's record 86 million, blaming land losses during the war and lower yields.
