US senate committee approves Taiwan act
The United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations approved on Wednesday the Taiwan Policy Act, the legislation aimed at boosting Washington's military support for the island.
The bill, which was passed with a bipartisan vote of 17–5, includes measures such as providing Taiwan with military assistance and imposing sanctions on Chinese firms that in any way endorse Beijing's actions against Taipei. The date when the act will reach Congress is still unknown.
The bill has been proposed as part of the US's efforts to aid Taiwan in what the island perceives as China's hostile interventions toward its territory. More recently, the Department of Defense approved a sale of arms to Taipeh worth $1.1 billion.
