Over 1M people without power in Florida amid hurricane

More than 1 million people in Florida were left without power on Wednesday after Hurricane Ian made landfall in the state as, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm.

Most power outages were reported along the state's west coast in Sarasota, Lee, Charlotte and Collier counties. US media reported that power companies stated they will not be restoring power until the hurricane has passed, which could take two days.

Before the storm hit, Florida authorities urged 2.5 million people to evacuate, but are now telling all those who haven't to stay where they are as it has become too dangerous to move.
