NHC warns of 'catastrophic storm surge' in Florida

The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) stated that Hurricane Ian is "battering the Florida peninsula with catastrophic storm surge, winds, and flooding." Around 1.5 million Florida residents are currently without power, with warnings issued to Georgia and North and South Carolina.

Maximum sustained winds are expected to reach 140 mph (220 km/h), with "catastrophic wind damage" near the hurricane's core, as well as "widespread, life-threatening catastrophic flash and urban flooding, with major to record flooding along rivers."
