Wall Street closes mostly lower after BoE warning

Wall Street closed mostly lower on Tuesday after Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey underlined that the central bank will stop buying United Kingdom government bonds on October 14 and that troubled pension funds that the BoE tried to help with the scheme have "three days left" to rebalance. The announcement seemingly affected the United States stock markets, which went through multiple changes of mood during the trading day. American investors await Federal Reserve meeting minutes and inflation figures later this week to figure out the direction of the overall economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index closed with a 0.12% gain as Amgen rose by 5.72%. The Nasdaq 100 decreased 1.24% at the close, pulled down by Netflix's 6.82% drop. The S&P 500 was down 0.65% at the end of trading with Las Vegas Sands, its worst performer, declining 7.46%.

The euro was 0.08% higher compared to the dollar, going for 0.97105 at 3:59 pm ET.
