US opens lower with midterms at center stage

Major stock market indexes in the United States opened lower on Wednesday as midterm elections continued to grab investors' attention. The Associated Press projected the Republican Party is leading the race of the House of Representatives for the time being. Meanwhile, Facebook's parent Meta Platforms Inc. confirmed it will reduce its workforce by 13% and extend a halt in new hires.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded 0.57% or 190 points lower at the opening. The S&P 500 decreased by 0.61%. The Walt Disney Company was the worst performer on both indexes at that moment, plunging by 9.06%. The Nasdaq 100 fell by 0.80%, with Lucid Group Inc. sinking by 10.22%.

The euro lost 0.46% to the dollar at 9:28 am ET to sell for $1.00252.
