UK rail workers turn down offer, holiday strikes likely

The British National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) rejected on Sunday an offer made by the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) in negotiations to stop the union from carrying out planned strikes in December and January. The union stated that RDG offered a 4% raise in 2022 and 2023, claiming that it demanded that the workers accept "vast changes to working practices and huge job losses" among other terms.

RMT concluded that the offer "does not meet any of our criteria for securing a settlement on long-term job security, a decent pay rise and protecting working conditions." The two sides will hold another meeting on Monday in a further attempt to avert the strikes. If a solution is not found, around 40,000 workers are expected to strike on December 13, 14, 16 and 17 and on January 3,4,6 and 7.
