Germany aims for air defense shield by 2027 - Scholz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Thursday that Berlin plans to develop an air defense program in the next five years. In an interview with the French newspaper Ouest-France, Scholz added that his government was also working towards spending at least 2% of its GDP on defense per year as per the pledge by NATO allies.

Expanding on the topic, Scholz said that "the government is talking to the manufacturers of the various systems to get ready for concrete decisions." Missiles considered for the program are Israel's Arrow 3 system, the US Patriot, and German IRIS-T units.

The move follows concerns when an explosion in November on the Ukrainian border caused by a stray missile killed two people in a Polish village. The incident prompted Germany to supply Poland with Patriot systems.
