Belgium to continue using nuclear power amid energy crisis

Belgium's Prime Minister Alexander De Croo confirmed on Monday that his government reached an agreement with French utility giant Engie SA on extending the life of two nuclear reactors for an additional ten years.

Speaking to reporters following a meeting of his cabinet, De Croo asserted that the deal would ensure Belgium's energy security. However, he noted that they haven't finalized the details of the agreement yet.

Belgium previously decided to phase out nuclear power entirely by 2025. However, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent energy crisis prompted the country to postpone the decision. About half of Belgium's electricity came from nuclear power in the past decade, per the official data.
