US federal probe reportedly targets Coca-Cola, Pepsi
The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is targeting Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. in its new investigation over possible price discrimination in the soft drink market, Politico reported, citing people with knowledge of the matter.
The probe comes as FTC reportedly looks to resurrect its long-standing but rarely used law prohibiting the practice of offering larger retailers preferential pricing at the detriment of their smaller rivals. According to two of the persons cited in the report, the FTC has been contacting major retailers, like Walmart Inc, over the past month asking for data and other details about how they buy and charge for soft drinks. The company itself is allegedly not being targeted by the probe.
