TSMC considering setting up new Japan, Europe plants
TSMC Co. confirmed on Thursday that the chipmaker is considering establishing its second manufacturing facility in Japan, as well as discussing the option of setting up its first European plant in an effort to diversify supply chains.
"In Europe, we are engaging with customers and partners to evaluate the possibility of building a specialty fab focusing on automotive-specific technologies, based on the demand from customers and the level of government support," CEO C.C. Wei said in an earnings call following the results released earlier today.
The German city of Dresden will likely host the production site, according to multiple media reports from last month. TSMC's management planned to visit the country in early 2023 to discuss the options, the reports noted.
