Harris urges Congress to pass policing reform bill
United States Vice President Kamala Harris urged Congress to quickly approve the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in the wake of the incident which led to the death of African-American Tyre Nichols on January 10.
"The persistent issue of police misconduct and use of excessive force in America must end now. I join President Biden in his call for accountability and transparency. We must build trust - not fear - within our communities," Harris said in a statement released by the White House.
The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is a policing reform draft bill introduced by the House Democrats in February 2021 aimed at addressing police misconduct, excessive force, and racial bias across the United States. Senate Republicans opposed the bill, which led to the collapse of the negotiations in September 2021.
