Schumer calls for protests in US to remain peaceful
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer joined the Biden administration's call for protests sparked by a video showing the beating of African-American Tyre Nichols to remain peaceful.
"We must honor Tyre Nichols’s memory by both making sure these officers are prosecuted to fullest extent of the law and by bringing lasting, meaningful change to create a more just and fair America. I join @POTUS and Tyre's family in asking for demonstrations to remain peaceful," Schumer noted in a Twitter post.
The video, released earlier today, shows five Memphis police officers beating Nichols, which led to his death three days later. Protesters gathered in major US cities in response to the video, including in New York City and Washington DC.
