Japan retail sales rise by 3.8% in December
Japan's retail sales surprised investors' expectations in December, rising by 3.8% on an annual basis to land at ¥15.2 trillion (~$116.4 billion), according to a preliminary report released on Tuesday by the country's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
On a monthly basis, the sales value went up by 1.1%. The total value of commercial sales amounted to ¥54.6 trillion, with 3.3% more goods sold compared to December 2021.
Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted value of sales in the wholesale industry reached ¥39.5 trillion, marking a year-on-year increase of 3.1%.
