German retail sales down 6.4% in December
Calendar and seasonally adjusted turnover in retail trade in Germany in December 2022 declined 6.4% year over year, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) revealed in its report on Tuesday. On a monthly basis, the figure was 5.3% lower. For the whole 2022, the reading was down 0.6% in comparison to the same timeframe in 2021.
In nominal terms, calendar and seasonally adjusted turnover in retail trade in December 2022 rose 4.2% on an annual level but fell 4.8% compared to November. Full-year 2022 retail sales in nominal terms jumped 7.8% year over year.
"In the first half of 2022, real turnover was up 3.1% on the first half of 2021, whereas it was markedly down (-4.1%) year on year in the second half of 2022," the report read.
