US opens higher after data, earnings
Major stock market indexes in the United States opened higher on Thursday after the newest preliminary report on the country's gross domestic product (GDP) showed a result lower than in the first estimate, but higher than market analysts predicted. Also, initial jobless claims saw another weekly decline. Earlier, Alibaba Group Holding Limited posted an annual rise in its third-quarter revenue, and Nvidia Corporation surprised estimates and made significant moves in after-hours trading last night and premarket this morning.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.44% or 144 points at the opening as Intel Corp went up by 1.69%. The Nasdaq 100 advanced by 1.31% or 158 points. The S&P 500 gained 0.75%. Nvidia was the leading performer on the latter two indexes, soaring by 12.67%.
The euro grew by 0.08% against the dollar at 9:28 am ET to sell for $1.06114.
