S. Korea offers to resolve forced labor row with Japan

South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin (pictured) on Monday announced the government will compensate Korean laborers forced to work for Japanese companies during World War II.

In line with the plans, Seoul will ensure payment to workers who won legal cases against Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Nippon Steel in 2018 using a government-supported foundation instead of requesting the Japanese corporations to cover the costs.

Park noted in a press brief that South Korea hopes the move would give rise to relations "based on reconciliation and cooperation ... toward the future beyond conflicts and hatred between Korea and Japan."
