Kirby: China shouldn't overreact over Tsai's US transit

United States National Security Council's Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby urged China on Wednesday not to "step up aggressive activity" around Taiwan in response to the island's President Tsai Ing-wen's transit trip to the US.

Kirby insisted there is "no reason" for Beijing to "react harshly" or "overreact" since Taiwanese leaders have done this regularly in the past and stressed Tsai herself transited the US six times already and met with US Congressional leaders.

The US official noted that Washington understands it has differences with Beijing but that the two sides "have managed them for over 40 years." He further stressed the importance of keeping lines of communication with China open on this, as well as other issues.
