Microsoft: Chinese hackers struck US cyber infrastructure

Microsoft Corporation shared on Wednesday in an blog post that a group of Chinese hackers targeted the United States cyber infrastructure across a number of industries.

According to Microsoft, the Chinese hacking group "Volt Typhoon," which has been active since mid-2021, attacked the systems with the goal to obtain intelligence. "In this campaign, the affected organizations span the communications, manufacturing, utility, transportation, construction, maritime, government, information technology, and education sectors. Observed behavior suggests that the threat actor intends to perform espionage and maintain access without being detected for as long as possible," Microsoft noted.

The group relies heavily on "living-off-the-land techniques and hands-on-keyboard activity," it was further written in the blog post. The group's aim is to obstruct "critical communications infrastructure between the United States and Asia," Microsoft concluded.
