N. Korea to launch spy satellite next month

North Korea confirmed that intends to launch a military reconnaissance satellite in June in order to monitor the alleged military activities of the United States, according to the state-owned Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The satellite launch is a crucial step to strengthen the country's preparedness for war, according to Ri Pyong-chol, the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Worker's Party of Korea (WPK). "We will comprehensively consider the present and future threats and put into more thoroughgoing practice the activities for strengthening all-inclusive and practical war deterrents," Ri was quoted as saying.

The announcement comes after the North notified Japan of its plan to launch the satellite between May 31 and June 11.
