Europe closes lower on economic jitters

Stock exchanges in Europe closed on Tuesday with losses as economic uncertainty seemingly swayed investors' confidence. The downward trajectory appeared to fueled up by the decline of the manufacturing activity across the euro area, Germany, and Britain, with Berlin's trade surplus shrinking in May compared to the month before.

Frankfurt's DAX fell 0.27% as Covestro AG declined 1.94%. The Euro Stoxx 50 dipped 0.16% with Banco Santander SA decreasing 1.73%. The CAC 40 dropped 0.23% as Alstom SA tumbled 2.98%. London's FTSE 10 was down by 0.10%. IMI plc was its worst performer, slipping by 2.21%.

The euro lost 0.15% against the dollar, selling at $1.08977 at 5:36 pm CET. The pound climbed 0.28% versus the greenback, trading at $1.27275.
