Asia down, yen falls to November '22 low against dollar

Stock exchanges in the Asia-Pacific fell on Thursday as negative sentiment concerning interest rates seemingly spread from the United States. In regional news, Japan launched a lunar lander, China was preparing to send another delegation to North Korea later this week, while Kurt Campbell, a senior White House official focused on Asia, reportedly became a frontrunner to take over as US deputy secretary of state.

The Nikkei 225 decreased by 0.25% at 4:09 am CET. The Shanghai Composite was 0.34% down at 3:54 am CET and the Shenzhen Composite Index declined 0.85% at 4:10 am CET. The Hang Seng lost 0.93% at 4:09 am CET. The Kospi in South Korea was 0.82% lower at the same time. The S&P/ASX 200 in Australia lost 1.11% at 4:09 am CET.

The dollar was flat compared to the Japanese yen at 4:11 am CET, trading for 147.6385. However, earlier in the session, it reached 147.876, its strongest point against the Japanese currency since November 2022.
