Haiti urges UN to deploy international mission

Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry called on the United Nations Security Council to "act urgently in authorizing the deployment of an international mission to support Haiti's police and military." Haiti has been plagued by crime perpetrated by organized gangs, including "kidnappings for ransom, looting, arson, massacres, sexual violence, organ trafficking, human trafficking, murders, extrajudicial killings, child soldiers, blockades of major roads," Henry said at the UN General Assembly.

The United States Department of State said 10 to 12 countries have made "concrete offers" to contribute to an international force that could be deployed in Haiti. According to the UN data, 2,400 people have died in the country in 2023, AFP reported.
