Solomon Islands PM declines Biden meeting

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare declined a meeting with United States President Joe Biden at the US-Pacific Island Country Summit in Washington, Australia's ABC News reported on Saturday. Sogavare was invited by the White House but said he must return to the Solomon Islands after the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which is currently taking place in New York.

A government official told the ABC that Sogavare is needed at home due to "domestic issues" including a number of bills making their way through the Solomon Islands parliament. In his speech at the UNGA, Sogavare praised China's Belt and Road initiative at a time when China and the US are competing for influence in the Pacific.
