Spanish PM hopeful Feijoo loses 1st parliament vote

Spanish Congress of Deputies voted on Wednesday against approving the appointment of the People Party's (PP) Alberto Nunez Feijoo as the future prime minister.

Needing 176 votes in favor, Nunez Feijoo collected just 172 from PP, Vox, Navarrese People's Union, and Canarian Coalition, versus 178 that voted against him. Local media say that is very unlikely that the parliamentary groups change their preferences before the next vote in two days.

After Friday, if Feijoo does not get the needed votes, the Spanish government will consider the beginning of a two-month countdown before calling new elections, and during this time, King Felipe VI could designate the incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez as a new candidate for the Presidency of the Government.
