Menendez pleads not guilty to bribery
Democratic United States Senator from New Jersey Bob Menendez, as well as his wife, pleaded not guilty to charges of bribery and extortion related to his "corrupt relationship with three New Jersey businessmen," in the hearing that took place in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday. Menendez will be released on a $100,000 bond.
Federal prosecutors accused the senator of accepting substantial sums of money, as well as gold bars and various gifts in return for leveraging his political power to advance the interests of both businesspeople and the government of Egypt.
Earlier, 29 Democratic senators and the White House urged him to step down, but he refused to resign claiming that the seized cash came from a personal account.
