German inflation slows to 4.5% in September

Annual inflation in Germany stood at 4.5% in September, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said in its preliminary report on Thursday. The figure was slightly lower than the 6.1% recorded in August and below analysts' forecasts.

Month on month, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.3%. The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices jumped 4.3% compared to the same timeframe a year ago, while on a monthly basis, the figure increased 0.2%. Annual core inflation, which excludes food and energy, stood at 4.6%.

The report noted that "this is the lowest value since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine" while adding that "the increase in energy prices (+1.0%) was well below the year-on-year rate of change in the overall index."
