Schumer slams McCarthy for letting House 'abandon' Ukraine

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (pictured) criticized on Thursday House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for attempting to remove aid for Ukraine from the defense appropriations bill as a concession to a conservative faction in the Republican Party. "If we’re forced to abandon Ukraine by a handful of extreme people who seem to have no sense of the reality of the world, we will pay a price for years to come. How can Speaker McCarthy let that happen?" Schumer said.

Schumer added the Senate will vote on a stopgap bill on Saturday, if not sooner, as the government runs out of funds on October 1. However, McCarthy already came out against the bill, arguing it does not address the situation on the southern border. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said a government shutdown is an "actively harmful proposition" that would "take the important progress being made on key issues and drag it backward."
