Breton praises EU's new technology policy
European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton praised on Tuesday the bloc's adoption of a "recommendation" focused "on [ten] critical technology areas for EU economic security," which also highlighted the four critical technology areas with high security and leakage risks: advanced semiconductors technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, quantum technologies, and biotechnologies.
The recommendation assesses technology risk and technology leakage, focusing on ten critical technology areas based on their transformative nature, potential for civil and military fusion, and potential misuse in violating human rights. According to the statement, the assessment is objective and the results are not yet anticipated.
The European Commission aims to evaluate the potential weaponization of critical technologies like semiconductors and AI by countries not aligned with its values, as part of its economic security strategy.
