US opens higher as data-packed week wraps up

New York stock exchanges opened on Friday with modest gains as investors digested the latest influx of economic data in the United States, which appeared to somewhat lift investors' confidence in the face of mounting geopolitical tensions.

The week was marked by American corporations' earnings releases and the meeting between President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. The US president also signed bills to extend government funding.

The Dow Jones was 0.22% higher at the opening bell. The Nasdaq 100 fell 0.15% as Applied Materials Inc. lost 5.17%. The S&P 500 added 0.11%. Minutes later, the Dow Jones was flat, and the S&P 500 slipped by 0.8%.

The euro rose 0.22% against the dollar, selling at 1.08698 at 9:29 am ET.
