US worried about Israeli settler 'violence' in West Bank

"We're deeply troubled by the sharp rise in violence by extremist Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank," United States Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, she reiterated that Washington is prepared to issue visa bans against "extremists" and added that the US "strongly" opposes the "advancement of settlements in the West Bank which undermines the possibility of a contiguous Palestinian state." The US wants to see the pause in hostilities in Gaza extended, she pointed out, emphasizing that "we will not rest until all hostages held by Hamas and other groups are released." Thomas-Greenfield warned Hamas that it will be the only side responsible if the ceasefire does not continue.

The US is also concerned about the "inflammatory rhetoric" surrounding the events in the Middle East and the potential spillover of the conflict to Lebanon, according to the diplomat, who also called on the UNSC to condemn Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
