US says assisted ships attacked by Houthis in Red Sea

The United States Central Command announced on Sunday in a post on X that its Arleigh-Burke Class destroyer USS Carney assisted three commercial vessels targeted by Yemen's Houthis.

The US Navy ship was patrolling the Red Sea when it detected and "responded to the distress calls from the ships and provided assistance." The vessels in question were Unity Explorer, a Bahamas-flagged, United Kingdom-owned and operated, bulk cargo ship; Number 9, a Panamanian flagged, Bermuda and UK-owned and operated, bulk carrier; and Sophie II, a Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier.

In addition, the US shared its Navy ship downed "a UAV launched from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen," as the drone was seemingly heading in its direction. However, it is unclear if Carney was the target or not. "These attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security," it was stressed in the post.
