UN: 'Heightened risk of atrocity crimes' in Gaza

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk (pictured) said on Wednesday that there is a "heightened risk of atrocity crime" in the Gaza Strip as the Israeli military continued striking the enclave after a week-long ceasefire.

Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, Turk stressed that the situation in Gaza is "apocalyptic" and called for an immediate ceasefire. "The only way to end the accumulative sufferings is ending the occupation and achieving the two-state solution," he noted.

Furthermore, Turk said that approximately 1.9 million civilians in Gaza were displaced and that they are forced to shelter in "overcrowded" places and live in "unsanitary" conditions.
