McCarthy to leave US House at year's end

Former United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced on Wednesday he will leave the lower congressional chamber at the end of 2023 to "serve America in new ways."

"I will continue to recruit our country's best and brightest to run for elected office," McCarthy said in an op-ed published by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). "It often seems that the more Washington does, the worse America gets. I started my career as a small-business owner, and I look forward to helping entrepreneurs and risk-takers reach their full potential."

McCarthy has served as House Representative from California since 2007. In the meantime, he also fulfilled the positions of House Majority Whip from 2011 to 2014, House Majority Leader from 2014 to 2019, House Minority Leader and House Republican Conference Leader from 2019 to 2023, and finally, House Speaker for approximately ten months in 2023.
