British immigration minister quits over Rwanda plan

United Kingdom Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick (pictured) has resigned following the government's new Rwanda bill, Home Secretary James Cleverly confirmed before the House of Commons on Wednesday.

Earlier today, the government published a draft emergency bill that concludes Rwanda is a "safe country" for asylum seekers. The proposed legislation grants ministers the authority to bypass specific provisions of the Human Rights Act, marking it as the most stringent immigration measure ever presented to Parliament, which is expected to vote on the plan tomorrow. Additionally, the bill seeks to prevent UK courts or tribunals from impeding the deportation of immigrants to Rwanda based on the argument that they face risks in being sent to an unsafe country.

"This will play a key part in our efforts to stop the boats and save lives – I would urge parliament to ensure the legislation is passed as soon as possible," Cleverly said.
