UK: Venezuela should cease unilateral moves on border with Guyana

United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Cameron urged Venezuela on Thursday, speaking at a press briefing in Washington, to halt its unilateral actions on its border with Guyana.

Cameron stated that he hopes to hold phone conversations with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali and other leaders in the region. Meanwhile, United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken shared in a statement that he talked with Guyana's head of state "to reaffirm the United States' unwavering support for Guyana’s sovereignty," reiterating Washington's call for a "peaceful solution."

On Sunday, although with a lackluster turnout, Venezuelans voted in favor of taking over the disputed oil-rich area Essequibo, which is currently under Guyana's control and takes up two-thirds of its territory. However, some citizens claimed the polling stations were empty, bringing into question the validity of the vote. The boundaries existing at present were set back in 1899 by international arbitrators, which Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has been trying to dismiss. Guyanese officials warned that this could be a pretext for annexation, as they perceive Venezuela's actions as an "existential threat."
