Judge bans separating migrant families at US border until 2031

A federal judge banned the separation of migrant families at the United States border, approving a settlement between the US Department of Justice and the American Civil Liberties Union, which was representing the affected families.

The court's order will last eight years, until December 2031. Under former US President Donald Trump's "zero-tolerance" policy, which was adopted back in 2018 and targeted migrants who entered the country illegally, over 5,000 children were separated from their families.

According to the settlement, the affected families might be eligible for certain benefits, including receiving legal status for up to three years on humanitarian parole, reunification in the US, which the government would finance, getting housing for one year, having counseling sessions for three years, and legal support in immigration court.
